Surgical pathology — Auckland (North and West)

The surgical pathology unit is an IANZ accredited laboratory service based at North Shore Hospital that provides histology and cytology services in North and West Auckland, and Northland. The unit is managed independently from the clinical laboratory.

Services we provide

The surgical pathology unit provides histology and cytology services for inpatients and outpatients of North Shore and Waitākere hospitals, Elective Surgery Centre and Tōtara Haumaru. They also provide histology services to BreastScreen Waitematā Northland and BreastScreen Auckland Central.

Histology
Histology is the study of tissue, under a microscope, to diagnose diseases and cancer.
Biopsy
A biopsy is a small portion of tissue that is removed for histological examination for diagnostic purposes.
Excision and resection
Excision and resection are the complete removal for histological examination for treatment options. For example, excision of a mole or resection of a segment of bowel.
Cytology
Cytology is the study of cells within fluid or aspirated (fine needle aspiration), under a microscope, to diagnose diseases and cancer.
