Services we provide
The hospital laboratory provides 24/7 support to the emergency department and hospital wards, with reduced services on weekends and public holidays
Community and outpatient laboratory services are available 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
- Laboratory testing requested in the community, must be taken at an Awanui collection centre.
- In some cases you will be referred to the laboratory's collection sites to have your specimen collected.
- On the day of your outpatient appointment only, laboratory staff at North Shore and Waitākere Hospitals are able to collect samples in the Outpatients' Department for testing at the hospital laboratories or for referral to specialist centres.
- The types of specimens taken include blood samples, urine or faeces samples and skin scrapings or swabs, for example from your throat or ear.
Commonly ordered tests are for:
- biochemistry
- haematology
- fertility, pregnancy and natal tests
- immunology
- microbiology.

You can be referred for a laboratory test by healthcare providers including general practitioners, midwives, nurse practitioners and specialist doctors.
