Set up and use a transfer bench

How to set up and use a bath and shower transfer bench at home.


What a transfer bench is

A transfer bench is a tool used for showering or bathing safely.

Most transfer benches have a maximum weight capacity. Your occupational therapist will make sure you get a bench that is right for you.


Use a transfer bench in the bath

Put the bench with the handle and suction feet in the bath

Make sure the suction cups are holding the transfer bench firmly in place.

Sit down on the end of the transfer bench

Move your bottom backwards towards the middle of the bench.

Swivel your bottom round and lift your legs over the bath edge

Use the handle if you need to.

Reverse the steps to get out of the bath

Reverse the above steps to use the transfer bench to get out of the bath.


Use a transfer bench in the shower

Put the bench with the handle and suction feet in the shower

Make sure:

  • the suction cups are holding the transfer bench firmly in place
  • there is enough room to get your legs into the shower when you are sitting on the bench.

You can remove the backrest if you do not need it.

Sit down on the end of the transfer bench

Use the handle if you need to.

Slide your bottom along the bench until you are in the shower

Turn your bottom around to get your legs in the shower.

Reverse the steps to get out of the shower

Reverse the above steps to use the transfer bench to get out of the shower.


Adjust the height of the transfer bench

Push in the metal buttons on the legs

Set legs at a height for the person using the transfer bench and so it is level.

Click the buttons into the correct holes

Make sure the:

  • buttons are completely popped out
  • transfer bench is level.
