Services we provide
The Child Health Team works with tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau at education venues, homes and in the community. The team is made up of people from multiple disciplines.
Public Health Nurses
Public Health Nurses:
- deliver public and personal health support for education settings, with a focus on what causes good and poor quality health, and reducing health inequities
- aim to increase health literacy and reduce hospitalisations for preventable health conditions
- deliver school-based and catch-up immunisations to protect tamariki and whānau from infectious diseases
- manage tuberculosis (BCG) vaccinations for eligible pēpi and tamariki
- manage vaccine-preventable disease notifications.
Some secondary schools have their own Public Health Nurse that holds health clinics and promotes wellbeing for students and staff.
Health Promoters, Vision and Hearing
Health Promoters, Vision and Hearing screen tamariki from 4 years old to school year 7 to identify hearing and vision concerns and refer to specialist services as required. They use health promotion strategies to promote hauora, in order to meet wider wellbeing needs identified in early Learning services.
Ear Nurse Specialists
Ear Nurse Specialists offer assessment, treatment and referral for tamariki with ear health concerns. They work from a mobile clinic.
B4 School Check Coordinator
The B4 School Check Coordinator works with primary health organisations to provide B4 School Checks to all 4-year-olds in Hawke's Bay.
Social Workers
Child Healthy Housing Programme Social Workers work with eligible whānau to increase the number of tamariki and their whānau living in warm, dry, and healthy homes to enhance their health and wellbeing and reduce the number of housing-related hospitalisations.
Kaiāwhina
Kaiāwhina support and deliver integrated programmes across the Child Health Team. They help empower whānau through promoting hauora and contributing to positive outcomes.
Nurse Practitioners
Expert nurses that work with Public Health Nurses to support and manage health needs by using their advanced knowledge and skills.
