Hapū Wānanga ki Tainui offer a series of free kaupapa Māori prenatal and postnatal education wānanga for people in Waikato.

Services we provide

1 day hapū wānanga

This is a condensed wānanga that covers:

  • pregnancy changes
  • stages of labour
  • birthing
  • pain relief
  • medical intervention
  • parenting
  • safe sleep
  • breastfeeding.

It is held every month, on a Friday or Saturday and is best suited for whānau in their second and third trimesters (over 20 weeks).

Breastfeeding WaiŪ wānanga

This is a 2.5 hour breastfeeding wānanga that covers:

  • preparing for pēpi
  • positioning pēpi
  • latching
  • breast and nipple care
  • tips on how to breastfeed successfully
  • basics of sleep, settling and early parenting.

This is held every 6 weeks on a Wednesday.

Wahakura waikawa wānanga 

This is a wānanga where you can learn to weave your very own wahakura waikawa (safe sleep bed) for pēpi alongside specialist weavers. This is held 4 times a year on a Friday or Saturday.

Te Kākano early pregnancy wānanga 

This is a 2.5 hour kaupapa Māori antenatal wānanga designed to support wāhine hapū and their whānau during the early stages of pregnancy.  It offers guidance and tools to help set the foundation for a healthy, well and positive hapūtanga. This wānanga is best suited for whānau in their first and second trimesters (under 20 weeks).

Postnatal wānanga

This is a 2.5 hour wānanga focusing on the transitional phase of welcoming pēpi into te ao mārama, inter weaved with mātauranga Māori it provides holistic guidance on physical recovery, emotional well being, and nurturing pēpi. This wānanga covers:

  • breastfeeding
  • bonding with pēpi
  • self-care
  • whānau support
  • navigating the early stages of parenting.
