Māori health services — Otago and Southland

Improving the health of Māori across Otago and Southland is a priority of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora. This means making sure Māori can access timely, appropriate, responsive and effective health care.

Services we provide

The Māori health directorate is committed to providing care and support that is both accessible and culturally acceptable to Māori.

Teams work alongside specialist services to support Māori returning home from hospital care or into community care services. The culture and philosophy of the Māori health directorate is to provide services of choice to Māori and non-Māori.

The Māori Health Directorate consists of 4 secondary care specialised teams.

Māori health services

Te Huinga Tahi Māori health unit provides cultural support services for Māori patients and their whānau. We endeavour to visit Māori patients during their stay in Southland Hospital, working with them to understand their journey and navigate the system and back into the community.

We also provide outpatient support and advocacy, and act as a resource for our staff members.
