Services we provide

Urology looks at diseases of the urinary system in females and the genitourinary system (urinary system plus genital organs) in males. The urinary system is made up of the:

  • kidneys — where wee (urine) is formed from material filtered out of the blood
  • ureters — tubes that carry wee from the kidneys to the bladder
  • bladder — a balloon-like organ that stores wee
  • sphincter muscles — muscles around the opening of the bladder into the urethra
  • urethra — the tube that carries wee to the outside of your body.

The male genital organs include the:

  • penis
  • scrotum
  • prostate gland.

Acute services are offered in Dunedin and Southland hospitals.

Mobile surgery on the lithotripsy bus is done at Dunedin Hospital for patients with kidney stones.

Some of the procedures we perform include:

  • wee tests (urinalysis)
  • urodynamic tests to check how much the bladder holds and the flow of wee from it
  • vasectomies.

Conditions we help treat include:

  • urinary tract infections
  • bladder control problems (urinary incontinence)
  • difficulty weeing (urinary retention)
  • kidney stones
  • bladder cancer
  • kidney (renal) failure
  • enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia)
  • inflamed prostate (prostatitis)
  • prostate cancer
  • blood in wees (haematuria)
  • protein in wees (proteinuria).
