Mental health emergency services

We provide 24/7 emergency mental health care services in Otago and Southland.

The Southland mental health emergency team based at Southland Hospital provides 24/7 service for people who need crisis mental health (emergency) treatment, assistance and information about The Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act.

The Emergency psychiatric service is a mobile 24/7 service providing emergency services to people with acute mental health needs.

The Psychiatric consultation liaison service assists Dunedin Hospital non-psychiatric staff in the management of general hospital patients (medical, surgical or obstetric) who also have concurrent psychiatric, behavioural or interpersonal problems.

Child and youth mental health services are delivered by 3 teams in Otago and Southland.

CAFS provides assessment and treatment primarily to tamariki and rangatahi aged up to 18 years.

About YSS

YSS provides assessment and treatment for rangatahi aged between 14 to 18 years.

A rangatahi Alcohol and other drug Counsellor works out of the Youth specialist service team and offers an outpatient clinic for rangatahi aged between 14 and 18 years and their whānau.

The service provides assessment, education and individually designed treatment packages. This service is available for individuals in the Dunedin area but the counsellor will provide advice to rural teams when needed.

This service provides a treatment programme tailored to the needs of the rangatahi and may include:

  • individual psychotherapy
  • educational and skills groups
  • group therapy
  • family therapy
  • medical management
  • medication
  • nutrition management with a dietitian.

The Youth forensic service provides access to mental health services for rangatahi:

  • aged between 14 and 17 years old
  • that are in contact with the juvenile justice system
  • who need of mental health screening, including alcohol and other drugs, and cultural assessment, treatment and Section 333 reports.

This service has a working knowledge of clinical interventions, cultural, risk and legislative issues to best assist rangatahi, their whānau and agencies involved.

This is a mobile service that works across Otago and Southland, with offices in Dunedin and Invercargill.

Ward 9C has 2 South Island regional rangatahi inpatient beds within a dedicated rangatahi area.

Adult patients are encouraged to avoid this area unless they are accessing their own rooms.

If not attending school or another external programme, rangatahi in Ward 9C are expected to attend the ward programme.

Adult community mental health services

Our teams provide community support for adults experiencing mental health issues, including expectant mothers. The teams are made up of health professionals who provide a range of specialist mental health services for people aged 18 years and over who have been diagnosed with a significant mental illness. We will also see people aged 16 or 17 if they have left school.

Appointments will be at the community mental health office nearest you or when appropriate, in your home or workplace. We also see people at medical centres if appropriate.

Outpatient groups are provided by Dunedin South community mental health services.

They provide specialised outpatient group psychotherapy for people with serious psychological disorders and associated disability or risk. Up to 12 people may be in each group.

Community programmes is a specialist mental health service, providing assessment, treatment and a recovery orientated group programme for individuals with a moderate to serious mental illness. There are 2 parts to our service.

Full morning programme

Provides assessment, targeted treatment and individual work within a structured group programme 4 mornings a week.

Recovery groups

Orientated towards meeting the specific needs of the individual. People can attend the module(s) that will be the most beneficial to their recovery.

The Southland maternal mental health team provides a free service to people in Southland. This service is available to all women who have a known or suspected mental health disorder, during pregnancy and for 1 year following birth.

The service provides quality care for women who may be experiencing difficulties relating to mental health (pēpi and whānau), during their pregnancy, birth, and postnatal experience, which promotes respect, dignity and acceptance within the community and promotes optimum mental health for mother.

Day activity centres are a place where people can be helped to expand or regain their confidence and life skills. Day activity centres are:

  • activity-based rehabilitation services and we encourage everyone to be involved in the running of the centre and planning of the activities
  • supportive environments with the emphasis on recovery.

We aim to support people's strengths, their whānau and significant others and endeavour to provide skills activities in the programme for Māori and Pacific peoples.

The Early intervention in psychosis service treats people aged 18 to 30 experiencing first-episode psychosis, and mothers experiencing postpartum psychosis for the first time no matter their age.

The treatment is provided through intensive therapy, education, and support, to recovery in a safe and supportive environment by a highly skilled specialised multidisciplinary team. We strive to involve the person's whānau as a key element of the client's recovery.

The Adult community mental health teams also provide a range of specialist mental health services for people aged 18 years and over who have been diagnosed with a significant mental illness and intellectual disability.

Appointments will be at the Community mental health office nearest you or when appropriate, in your home or workplace. We also see people at medical centres if appropriate.


Adult inpatient mental health services

Inpatient units at Wakari and Southland hospitals support people in an acute phase of a mental health disorder or with associated intellectual disabilities.

Ward 9B is a locked unit providing a safe therapeutic environment for clients in an acute phase of a mental health disorder who are unable to be managed in a less restricted area, such as an open ward.

Through individual assessment, treatment, and stabilisation the person is able to be transitioned back to the community either directly or through the rehabilitation unit.

Ward 9C is an open, 16 bed inpatient facility providing mental health care for adults who have been assessed as requiring a period of further assessment, investigations or interventions where these cannot be safely provided in the community.

Ward 10A is a 12-bed, medium secure locked inpatient unit providing support and treatment to people:

  • with an intellectual disability or mental illness who are displaying challenging behaviour which cannot be safely managed in the community
  • that need an assessment under the Intellectual Disability (Compulsory Care and Rehabilitation) Act 2003 (IDCCR) or Criminal Proceedings (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act 2003
  • who have committed criminal offences which have been dealt with by the Courts under IDCCR legislation.

Ward 11 cares for people who need a further period of stabilisation or rehabilitation beyond their stay in an acute ward. From there, we help them transition back in to the community with supports in place specific to their needs.

Helensburgh Cottage is a safe and supportive environment for people who have an intellectual disability with associated challenging behaviour or mental health issues and have been directed to accept care, treatment or rehabilitation under the Intellectual Disability (Compulsory Care and Rehabilitation) Act 2003.

The Inpatient mental health unit has 16 beds providing inpatient care for people in Southland and the Wakatipu area.

Patients are usually admitted voluntarily but may also be admitted under the Mental Health Act.

Specialist addiction services services offer support and treatment options in Otago and Southland if you are concerned about your own, or someone else’s alcohol or drug use.

Specialist addiction services include:

  • addiction specialist psychiatrist
  • assessment of needs in relation to addiction
  • one to one counselling and case management in relation to substance use
  • opioid substitution treatment
  • assessment and referral to residential addiction services including detox (medical withdrawal) services
  • advice and support regarding compulsory treatment under the Substance Addiction Act
  • advice regarding community supports.

This service is for adults.

We accept referrals from:

  • your main healthcare provider (GP)
  • other health professionals involved in your care
  • community agencies.
