Women's Assessment Unit


The women's assessment unit provides urgent care for pregnancy or gynaecology complications and is open 24 hours 7 days a week. You need to be referred to the unit by your midwife, doctor or healthcare provider.

General gynaecology services

General gynaecology services can help with:

  • assessment and treatment of period (menstrual) problems. including heavy, painful or irregular periods
  • endometriosis and pelvic pain
  • hormone replacement therapy 
  • contraceptive and sterilisation advice
  • referral to the early pregnancy assessment unit.

Minimally invasive gynaecology service (MIGS)

We provide treatment for women with:

  • uterine fibroids 
  • problems with periods, including heavy, painful or irregular periods
  • endometriosis and pelvic pain
  • pelvic pain and pelvic floor hyperactivity.

Urogynaecology

Urogynaecology is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor problems.

Our service provides help with:

  • bladder problems
  • urinary incontinence — leaking urine (wee)
  • genital prolapse (organs falling or slipping out of place).

Gynaecology oncology

Our service provides world class comprehensive treatment and care for women with all forms of gynaecological cancer, including:

  • cervical cancer
  • vulval cancer
  • ovarian cancer
  • uterine cancer.

We work closely with the regional cancer and blood service at Auckland City Hospital (chemotherapy and radiation therapy services) to deliver the best possible outcomes for women and their whānau.

Accessing our services

You can access our services if you live in the Auckland region as well as the Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora regions for Counties Manukau, Waitematā and Northland, and if you live in Gisborne, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty.

You need to be referred to us by your healthcare provider.

Colposcopy

Colposcopy examination is usually needed when your cervical smear test results need further checking. A special magnifying instrument (colposcope) is used to take a closer look at your vagina and cervix.

Vulva clinic

The vulva clinic provides care for women from Auckland and other parts of New Zealand with conditions of the vagina and vulval area. You are welcome to bring a support person with you when you visit the clinic.

Gynaecology psychology service

Our gynaecology psychology service supports women to:

  • make changes to their physical health
  • promote their general wellbeing
  • cope with mental distress.  

We see women coping with a range of gynaecology conditions including:

  • menopause
  • pelvic pain, antenatal pain and endometriosis
  • genital pain conditions such as vaginismus and vulvodynia
  • cervical, vulval and ovarian conditions
  • hysterectomy
  • sexuality concerns following cancer treatment and radiation therapy
  • complex adolescent gynaecological conditions.  

We can meet with you one-on-one, with your partner or with your whānau to talk about ways to help with:

  • making choices about treatment 
  • pain and other symptom management strategies 
  • adjusting to a health condition 
  • lifestyle planning around a health condition 
  • sexuality and relationship concerns.
