The Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit (ASRU) is a 20-bed facility and one of only two specialist spinal rehabilitation units in New Zealand.

We serve patients from the Central North Island to the far North, with our Southern border extending from Taumarunui, Turangi, and across to Wairoa/Gisborne.

Our unit provides care for individuals who have sustained spinal cord injuries, which may result in complete or partial loss of movement and/or sensation in various parts of the body.

How to get to Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit

Parking

Parking, including disabled parking, is available at both entrances to the spinal unit. Please avoid parking in the ambulance bay directly in front of the ward entrance. It's preferable to park behind the physiotherapy gym area.

Remember to lock your car and avoid leaving valuables inside. While there is a security guard on site during certain hours, the Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit is not responsible for stolen or lost property.

Mobility parking permit

Parking permit allows people to park in accessible car parks, standard car parks for extended periods, and time-restricted zones for longer than the stated times. The scheme is operated by CCS and involves a cost criterion.

*Note: A parking permit is available at reception for patients and families to borrow for outings.

Visiting hours

We understand that visits from family and friends are crucial for your rehabilitation. However, sometimes a patient's condition or rehabilitation program may limit visiting times. It's important to respect the privacy of other patients.

Visitors are welcome at the Unit from 11am to 8pm, Monday to Sunday.

Children under 16 must be strictly supervised.

Please ask your visitors to respect the visiting hours.

Facilities

The Harrison Learning Centre at the Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit, located next to the dining room, offers games, puzzles, books (available for loan), a quiet place to relax, and a piano.

To ensure everyone enjoys the Centre, we have a few agreements:

  • Computers are for patients' use only; children are not allowed to use or play with them.
  • The Centre is for patients and their visitors to relax, learn, and enjoy.
  • Staff may restrict the use of the facilities as needed.

Feel free to visit and make the most of the resources available!

Opening Hours:

  • Monday to Friday, 9.00 am – approx. 7.00 pm (On request at the weekends)

The inpatient unit has 20 beds for short-term spinal cord rehabilitation. It serves patients aged 15 and older who have neurological deficits from spinal cord injuries caused by trauma, injury, or illness.

A telephone or video consultation service in some circumstances may be available for people who have a scheduled appointment with Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist or the ASRU Outpatient Team.

Patients may make short, local phone calls using the ward phone.

  • Unit phone: (09) 270 9000
  • Ward phone: (09) 270 9016

Mails are delivered to the ward daily during the week. Outward mails can be posted from administration, but are to have stamps.

Patients in the Auckland area are encouraged to have family/whānau handle their personal laundry needs. For patients from other areas, it is also preferred that family/whānau take care of laundry. If this is not possible, laundry facilities with washing powder are available on the ward. To economize, it's best to do laundry in bulk loads, so having at least five complete changes of clothing is recommended.

The unit takes no responsibility for loss or damage to personal property. To prevent loss, it is advisable to clearly label your clothing.

Feedback

We welcome feedback (compliments, suggestions, enquiries, or complaints) from patients and whānau to help us improve our services.

If you have a problem you want sorted straight away, talk with the staff caring for you or ask to speak with a manager in that area.

New Zealand Spinal Cord Injury Registry

The New Zealand Spinal Cord Injury Registry (NZSCIR) collects data on individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) to enhance understanding and improve support, prevention, and management of SCI in New Zealand. It includes both traumatic and non-traumatic SCI cases from Auckland and Christchurch.

The registry gathers information such as age, gender, ethnicity, basic SCI data, and treatment locations. With consent, it also includes details on treatment, complications, rehabilitation, and medical conditions. By following consenting participants, the registry aims to understand the long-term impact of SCI and identify necessary services for community participation.
