Mate huakita ā-tara Bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of bugs (bacteria) that are normally found in the vagina in small numbers. The exact cause is not known, but it is not passed on during sex.

Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis

Some people do not notice any symptoms. But you may notice a change in your vaginal discharge — a change in colour, the amount, or a bad smell.

Most people do not have any long term problems. But it can sometimes cause:

  • pregnancy problems
  • pelvic infections
  • other sexually transmitted infections.

Diagnosing bacterial vaginosis

A healthcare provider will take a sample of vaginal discharge. You will get your results at your appointment.

You may have other infections, so they may also do other tests to rule out sexually transmitted infections.

Treating bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is usually treated with antibiotic tablets. It is important to take your full course.

Unfortunately bacterial vaginosis commonly comes back.

Using condoms for at least one month after treatment reduces the chances of this happening.

Treating a partner is not necessary and does not prevent repeat infection.
