Counties Manukau has over 9,000 staff and provides patient and whānau-centred care and services to more than half a million people in the district.
Middlemore Hospital is South Auckland’s largest and busiest hospital. It is an advanced tertiary hospital with comprehensive medical and surgical facilities. They offer niche services in orthopaedic and plastic surgery, burns, spinal injury rehabilitation, vascular surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, renal dialysis, and neonatal intensive care.
Middlemore Hospital is South Auckland’s largest and busiest hospital, delivering patient and whānau-centred care with a strong focus on cultural competency. It is an advanced tertiary hospital with comprehensive medical and surgical facilities.
Services and Capacity
The hospital treats nearly 100,000 inpatients and provides over 500,000 outpatient services annually. It offers extensive specialist care, including orthopaedic and plastic surgery, burns, spinal injury rehabilitation, vascular surgery, maxillofacial surgery, renal dialysis, and neonatal intensive care.

Middlemore hosts the National Burns Centre, Kidz First Children’s Hospital, a birthing unit, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and Tiaho Mai, a 24-hour acute mental health unit.
Emergency and Critical Care
Home to one of the busiest emergency departments in the Southern Hemisphere, Middlemore ED is supported by a fully integrated ICU, Advanced Cardiac Care Units, and the Critical Care Complex (CCC), which also serves as a training centre for medical specialists.

If you have a family, the Tree House, based at Middlemore Hospital, is a community-based not-for-profit early childhood education centre providing affordable childcare for staff at Middlemore Hospital and our local community.
Travel to the hospital
The Middlemore train station is situated across the road from the Middlemore Hospital and we also have handy access to bus stops nearby.
Middlemore’s state-of-the art National Burn Centre opened in 2006. The facility provides treatment and rehabilitation for some of New Zealand’s most severe burn patients.
Staffed by world class doctors, burn surgeons, and specialists the team were an integral part of the Whakaari, White Island emergency response in 2019.
Kidz First Children’s Hospital, based at Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland, is a purpose-built facility offering family‑centred paediatric care to the culturally diverse Counties Manukau region. It provides inpatient surgical (orthopaedic, plastics, ENT) and medical care, neonatal intensive and special care, child protection services, and nutrition and dietetics.
Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
Kidz First neonatal care provides intensive care (Level III) and special care (Level II) services and is an integral part of the continuum of services delivered by the Kidz First and women’s health divisions.

Construction work at Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora’s $316m Manukau Health Park redevelopment started in February 2023.
Features of the site redevelopment include:

- 20 post-anaesthesia care unit beds and 4 new theatres
- a new building to expand ophthalmology and women’s health.

Manukau Super Clinic and Surgery Centre
Manukau Super Clinic and Manukau Surgery Centre sit within the new Manukau Health Park site which is undergoing a large expansion bringing more services and facilities into the site. The expansion project includes a new ambulatory renal care centre, new breast care and screening services, a standalone theatre block with four new theatres.
Botany SuperClinic provides specialist outpatient services for East Auckland, reducing the need to travel to Middlemore Hospital. By referral only, it offers medical, surgical, and diagnostic clinics, including cardiology, diabetes, oncology, gynaecology, and rehabilitation. Onsite services include radiology, physiotherapy, pharmacy, dental, and audiology, supporting coordinated community-based healthcare.
The Auckland Regional Plastic and Hand Reconstructive Centre is located at Middlemore Hospital and Manukau Health Park. It provides specialist care for both adults and children across the Northern Region, serving around 1.7 million people.
The centre’s expert team treats a wide range of conditions, including:
- Cleft lip and palate
- Microtia (small or missing ears)
- Burns
- Head and neck surgery
- Breast reconstruction and melanoma
- Lymphoedema care
- Complex injury reconstructions (breast, chest, limbs, sarcoma)
- Brachial Plexus and nerve/tendon transplants
- Congenital and complex hand conditions
A dedicated team of highly skilled hand surgeons (orthopaedic and plastic surgery specialists) ensures patients receive the best possible care. The centre also has its own purpose-built plastic surgery unit.
Aotearoa Clinical Trials is based on the Middlemore Hospital site for staff interested in research as well as other opportunities to be part of world-leading projects, clinical breakthroughs and healthcare innovations.
The Critical Care Complex (CCC) comprises of 2 closed Units, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the High Dependency Unit (HDU).
They provide specialised medical and nursing care to patients, both adult and paediatric, who are critically ill.
Both units are staffed by a team of highly experienced and professional doctors and nurses, who are supported by other allied healthcare professionals.
Critical Care Complex is a training unit for doctors training in intensive care medicine, anaesthesia, emergency medicine as well as other specialties.
The Counties Manukau renal service provides a range of in-centre haemodialysis options across several locations. The Scott Dialysis Unit at Middlemore Hospital is the primary site, also offering in-centre nocturnal haemodialysis for suitable patients. Additional dialysis services are available at the Rito Dialysis Unit at Manukau SuperClinic and the Toto Ora Dialysis Unit at the Māngere Centre, ensuring accessible care for the community.

Pukekohe Primary Birthing Unit, located within Pukekohe Hospital, offers 24/7 care for low‑risk pregnancies, labour, birth, and immediate post‑partum recovery. It features 2 birthing rooms with pools, single and double postnatal rooms, and breastfeeding support. The unit includes a dedicated Maternity Resource Centre for antenatal education and midwife access.
Botany Downs Primary Birthing Unit
The Botany Downs birthing unit is a purpose-built facility located near the Botany Town Centre, that provides a quiet, pleasant environment.
The unit currently has 5 birthing rooms (2 with labour pools), and postnatal accommodation. Approximately 400 women birth in this unit per year while 1,500 women transfer from a base hospital for their postnatal stay.

Papakura Primary Birthing Unit
This historical farmhouse is now the home of the Papakura Birthing Unit. It is close to the main town centre of Papakura and serves the Manurewa, Clendon, Wattle Downs, Conifer Grove, Takanini, Papakura, Clevedon, Kawakawa Bay, Ōrere Point, Hunua, Paparimu, Drury, Hingia and Karaka areas.

Pukekohe Primary Birthing Unit
Located on the corner of Tuakau Rd and Kitchener Rd, at the base of Pukekohe Hill. Adjacent to the Pukekohe Aged Care and other outpatient services. Area coverage extends east to Kaiaua, south to Meremere, west to Port Waikato up to Waiuku and the Awhitu Peninsula and north to Drury.

Tiaho Mai is a residential unit, supporting people with mental health problems during a crisis. They provide a 24-hour mental health treatment services for people with serious or complicated mental health concerns.
Tiaho Mai means ‘the light that comes from the moon and the stars - shine here’ in Te Reo Māori.
Nga Whetu Marama (translates to “the Bright Stars”) is a marae/whare situated alongside Tiaho Mai. It was named by the local Kaumatua and Kuia of Tainui.
As well as our Tiaho Mai, Acute Inpatient Mental Health Unit, we also deliver a range of community mental health and addictions services including Te Rawhiti, Matariki, Springs Road, Tamaki Oranga, Lambie Drive, Pukekohe Hospital, Awhinatia and the Koropiko Mental Health Services for Older People.
The Department of Renal Medicine at Middlemore Hospital offers comprehensive care for all aspects of renal disease including general nephrology, all dialysis modalities, in-patient care, out-patient treatment, and pre-transplant work up and post-transplant follow up.
