Joining and participating in Breastscreen Aotearoa

If you are eligible and due for a mammogram with BreastScreen Aotearoa, you should receive an invitation by email, text or letter. You can enrol and book either:

  • online using the secure personalised link in your invitation
  • by freephoning 0800 270 200

Enrolment consent

BreastScreen Aotearoa provides free breast screening for eligible women and people aged 45 to 69, or who qualify for the age extension if aged 70 to 74 who:

  • have breast tissue, and
  • are eligible for free public healthcare.

We may not be able to determine your eligibility for free public healthcare from your National Health Index (NHI) number.

Your medical records and information

BreastScreen Aotearoa may:

  • Request your medical records from your healthcare providers
  • Provide your medical record to your healthcare providers.

Your medical records include your mammograms and other breast imaging, breast procedures, treatment for breast cancer, and any other clinical information that can assist to manage your healthcare.

Healthcare providers include your GP (family doctor), hospitals, and specialists. You can tell us that you do not want your GP to receive your results.

BreastScreen Aotearoa stores your records, screening information, and personal data securely and confidentially.

Your records and information may be used:

  • when BreastScreen Aotearoa is checked and monitored. Our monitoring information that is publicly available will not identify you.
  • for research that has been approved by Health New Zealand- Te Whatu Ora. Only anonymous data (data that does not include personal data and cannot identify individuals) is provided for research.
