New online breast screening system

BreastScreen Aotearoa has launched a new breast screening system called Te Puna.

A new online breast screening system — Te Puna is now live across most of Aotearoa New Zealand

The new BreastScreen Aotearoa system called Te Puna* will make it easier to enrol and book for free breast screening appointments.

The system is supplied with information from a combination of sources including National Health Index (NHI). It will:

  • enable more women to join the free national breast screening programme by automatically identifying who is eligible
  • let women who are already enrolled know that they are due for their mammogram
  • provide an online option for enrolling, booking and changing breast screen appointments.

By reaching more people, we aim to increase screening participation and save more lives from breast cancer through early detection.

*The name of the new system — Te Puna, translates to ‘the spring’ and was gifted to the programme to reflect the purpose of the BreastScreen Aotearoa programme to protect the life and health of wāhine.

If you live in one of the below regions and your health records identify you as 45 to 69 years old and female, you may be contacted by BreastScreen Aotearoa.

  • Midland — Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Lakes District
  • Te Waipounamu
  • Central — Wellington, Hutt Valley, Kapiti and Wairarapa
  • Coast to Coast — Manawatū, Horowhenua, Tararua, Whanganui, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and East Coast.

To ensure your invitation reaches you, make sure your contact details are up to date. You can update your contact details via your usual healthcare provider, or freephone 0800 270 200

Te Puna will be live for the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand by June 2025.
