Urodynamics bladder test

A urodynamic bladder test is used to find out how your bladder is working. It can identify the cause of bladder problems like incontinence, infections and difficulty weeing. It is also known as a pressure test. The results will help your healthcare provider decide on the best treatment for you.

Why you might have a urodynamic bladder test

You might have this test when:

  • we want to check for symptoms of incontinence
  • initial ways to manage incontinence have not worked
  • to see if surgery is needed
  • you have had surgery and are experiencing bladder issues.

Before your urodynamics bladder test

You do not normally need to do any special preparation for this test. But you may be asked to change how much you drink beforehand, or to stop taking certain medications.

What happens during the urodynamics bladder test

You may find the test uncomfortable, but it should not be painful. The test takes around 30 minutes to complete.

During the test:

  1. soft, fine tubes are placed into your bladder and rectum to record pressure readings in both your bladder and tummy and pelvis.
  2. your bladder is filled with sterile water
  3. you will be asked to cough, push down and walk on the spot.

At the end of the test you will need to wee into a special toilet called a flow meter. This measures how much you are weeing and how quickly.

After the urodynamics bladder test

After the test you may feel uncomfortable when you wee for a few hours. Drinking water often may help.

Contact your healthcare provider straight away if you have pain, chills or fever.

Getting your results

Depending on the type of test done, your results may be available straight after the test. Other tests may take a few days to come back.

Your healthcare provider will talk to you about the results and possible treatments
