Foot orthotics Āwhinatanga mō te waewae me te whatīanga raparapa

Foot orthotics are shoe inserts that support your foot. They aim to reduce any foot and leg pains.

What foot orthotics are

An orthotic (sometimes called an orthosis) is designed to guide your foot so it works in a precise way. This helps your muscles and tendons work more efficiently.

It provides the support necessary to keep your feet, ankles and lower limbs:

  • comfortable
  • healthy
  • pain-free.

Orthotics come in many shapes and forms. There are different types for different activities, shoes and foot problems.

There are 3 main types of orthotics — prescription, prefabricated, and over-the-counter innersoles.

  • Prescription orthotics are designed specifically for your foot. They are custom made to suit your needs. They can also be designed with specific shoes in mind.
  • Prefabricated orthotics are pre-made. They can be modified to suit your foot. They are usually made of a foam material and are best fitted to sports shoes or similar.
  • Over-the-counter innersoles are usually soft gel liners. They provide cushioning to reduce pressure or help with shock absorption.

Who should wear foot orthotics

Many people can benefit from orthotics. They can treat many common foot problems that cause pain and discomfort, such as:

Getting help with orthotics

Podiatrists work with people who have foot, ankle and lower limb problems. They:

  • assess the way your feet and legs work to see if orthotics will improve your problem
  • provide assessment and treatment to manage your problem
  • recommend and provide the most appropriate orthotic to help you
  • modify an orthotic to meet your specific needs.

You should visit a podiatrist if you have used an over-the-counter orthotic and still have pain.
