Contraceptive pills (the pill) are a safe and effective way of preventing pregnancy. There are 2 types of contraceptive pill. Not all types of contraceptive pills are suitable for all people. The pill cannot protect you from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

If you have had unprotected sex and are worried about being pregnant, you may want to take use emergency contraception. There are 2 types available, the emergency contraceptive pill (the morning after pill) or a copper IUD.

An intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is used to prevent pregnancy. You can get copper IUDs or hormonal IUDs (Mirena or Jaydess). These sit inside your uterus (womb).

Before you decide to have sex, talk to your sexual partner about safe sex. For protection against sexually transmitted infections, you should always use a condom.
