Optometrists Mātanga karu

Optometrists provide eye care by conducting eye examinations. They check eye health, diagnose and treat vision problems and treat eye diseases.

What optometrists do

Optometrists are part of a group of eye care practitioners that also includes dispensing opticians and ophthalmologists. They:

  • do eye exams and check eye health
  • diagnose eye disease or other conditions
  • check vision and prescribe corrective lenses if required, which may include glasses or contact lenses.

Adults should visit an optometrist every 2 years for an eye exam to check eye health and vision.

Optometrists mostly work in private practices. A small number are employed in hospital eye departments and private ophthalmology clinics.

Dispensing opticians sell and fit glasses, but cannot perform eye health examinations or prescribe corrective lenses or medications.

Ophthalmologists are doctors who specialise in managing serious eye conditions and performing eye surgery.
