Chiropractors

Chiropractors focus on problems with your spine and nervous system. They can help reduce pain, improve movement and support your body's natural ability to heal. They use hands-on techniques or specialised chiropractic tools to move and adjust your spine to allow your nervous system to function better.

What chiropractors do

Chiropractors get your joints moving by adjusting them, either by hand or with gentle specialised chiropractic tools. This can help treat:

  • back pain
  • neck pain
  • pain in your joints
  • headaches
  • numbness, tingling or pain being referred from your spine to your arms, legs or other parts of your body.

Finding a chiropractor

All chiropractors work in private practices.

Your healthcare provider can refer you. You can also visit a chiropractor without a referral.

Cost of seeing a chiropractor

There is normally a charge to see a chiropractor. If your pain is the result of an injury or accident, ACC may partly cover the costs.

Costs may also be covered if you:

  • have private health insurance
  • are a Work and Income beneficiary who qualifies for financial support
  • are an approved war veteran.

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) is a government agency that helps pay for treatment if you are injured in an accident.

The ACC provides comprehensive, no-fault personal injury cover for all residents and visitors to Aotearoa New Zealand. This means if you are hurt in an accident, ACC can help no matter who caused the accident.

If you have an accident and need emergency care in a hospital, it will be covered by ACC.

ACC usually pays some of the other medical costs if you have an accident, like surgery, physiotherapy and medicines. ACC may also be able to cover some loss of earnings resulting from an accident.
