Services we provide

The adult mental health and addictions service provides a single point of entry point for all referrals to adult mental health in the region.

Our team includes:

  • a psychiatrist
  • a registrar
  • occupational therapists
  • social workers
  • community mental health nurses.

We will asses your mental health needs first by phone or at a face-to-face appointment. Then we will work out the best action for your treatment.

Our services include perinatal mental health, opioid treatment, and other services.

Perinatal mental health

This service supports pregnant women and new mothers who have problems with their mental health. We will talk about treatment options with you. We may refer you to other services such as the Postnatal Therapy Service or a Well Child Tamariki Ora provider.

Opioid treatment service

This specialist service works to reduce the harms caused by opioid dependence — the uncontrolled addiction to morphine, oxycodone, methadone, codeine or other opioids.

The service is based in Rotorua with outpatient services covering Taupō, Tūrangi and Mangakino.

You can be referred to this service by your healthcare provider or by a drug and alcohol service. You can also self-refer.

Once you are referred, you will be offered an appointment within 2 weeks.

Other services

The Rotorua and Taupō MHAS service also offers:

  • general hospital mental health liaison services
  • treatment for co-existing problems such as mental illness together with alcohol or other substance abuse
  • eating disorder liaison clinician.
