Services we provide

B6 cares for patients having bone marrow (stem cell) transplants.

Transplants can be:

  • autologous (the patient and the donor are the same person)
  • allogeneic (stem cells are donated by another person).

Bone marrow transplants are used to treat blood cancers such as:

  • leukaemia
  • myeloma
  • lymphomas
  • solid tumours.

We also transplant patients with multiple sclerosis.

B6 has 21 single ensuite rooms. The unit is hepa filtered and has one negative pressure room.

Patient and visitor information

Patients in BMTU have low immunity which means they have difficulty fighting bacteria and viruses that a healthy person can fight. It is very important that visitors:

  • do not visit if you have a cough, cold, flu symptoms or vomiting and diarrhoea
  • do not bring fresh flowers as these pose an infection risk.

When entering the unit

  • Read and follow signs at the entrance of B6 and on the door of the patient's room. We will place a sign on the patients door with any special precautions that you need to follow.
  • Wash your hands as you come into B6 and again before you enter the patient's room. Use soap and water or hand gel.
  • The bathrooms are for patients only. You can find a visitor bathroom at the entrance to BMTU or down the main corridor past the elevators.

What you can bring

  • Entertainment, for example tablet, games, cards, books, magazines, puzzles, craft projects.
  • Photos, pictures, reminders from home — anything that will brighten the room (except fresh flowers).
  • Processed or packaged foods.
  • A smile and an encouraging word. This can be a distressing time for patients.

Visiting hours

  • Visiting hours are 8am to 1pm and 3pm to 8:30pm.
  • Visitors are restricted to 2 people at a time. Children may visit.
