If you have had an abnormal smear result, you will be referred to us for a colposcopy. Colposcopy is looking at your cervix through a colposcope. It is similar to having a smear test.

Services we provide
The colposcopy department provides:
- colposcopy assessment
- treatment of abnormal cervical cells
- post-treatment follow up.
Treatments are done under local or general anaesthetic on an outpatient basis — you will not need to stay in the hospital. New patients have a 30 minute appointment. Follow up patients have a 15 minute appointment. We run around 10 colposcopy clinics a week.
You are welcome to bring a support person to your appointment.

Women can be referred to colposcopy services by:
- Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa (external link)
- healthcare providers such as GPs and nurses
- sexual health clinics
- Christchurch Women's Prison.
