The Hospital Dental Service at Christchurch Hospital provides specialist dental care to people in the Canterbury region. It is also a tertiary referral centre for the West Coast and Nelson and Marlborough regions.

Services we provide

The Hospital Dental Service provides care in:

  • special care dentistry
  • pedodontics
  • orthodontics
  • prosthodontics
  • maxillofacial prosthetics.

Relief of Pain Clinic

If you have dental pain and you get a benefit from the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), you are eligible to attend the Relief of Pain Clinic at the Hospital Dental Service.

Relief of Pain Clinics run Monday to Friday, except on public holidays.

The clinics start at 8:30am for the morning session and 1:30pm for the afternoon session.

One tooth is treated per visit.

Subsidised charges apply for the service:

  • consult (including X-rays and/or prescription) $20
  • treatment (if provided at the same appointment) $20
  • total cost for a consult and treatment on the same day $40.

We can provide a quote for MSD if needed.

Full Dental Clearance Clinic 

You may be eligible for the full dental clearance clinic at the hospital dental service if you get a benefit from MSD and you need either:

  • all your teeth removed
  • all your upper teeth removed
  • all your lower teeth removed.

We cannot accept new referrals right now as the waiting list is too long.


Referral information

You do not need a referral for the Relief of Pain Clinic but you must make an appointment the day before your visit. Phone the Hospital Dental Service to make an appointment.

You need a referral for the Full Dental Clearance Clinic. We accept referrals from your:

  • general medical practitioner (GP)
  • general dentist
  • other healthcare provider.

We are not accepting new referrals right now as the waiting list is too long.
