Audiology is the study of hearing and balance. Audiologists at Christchurch Hospital assess and manage hearing, listening and balance disorders.

Services we provide
Audiology services at Christchurch Hospital include:
- hearing assessments for children
- hearing and balance assessments — for people of all ages who are under the care of the ear, nose and throat specialists
- ototoxicity monitoring — for people exposed to medications that can affect hearing
- follow up from the newborn hearing screening and early intervention programme.
Hearing aid services for children are provided offsite by the Children’s Hearing Aid Service. We can provide referrals to this service.
Hearing aid services for adults can be accessed in the community. You can self-refer to your local audiology clinic to be assessed for or get hearing aids.
Referral information
We accept referrals from:
- healthcare providers including general practitioners, paediatricians, and ear, nose and throat specialists
- newborn hearing screeners
- vision hearing screeners.
If you are sending a referral for a child or young person, include details about:
- level of concern regarding hearing
- speech and language development
- general development
- any other known medical conditions that may be associated with hearing loss
- relevant social information or the need for an interpreter.
