Taipā residents warned against swimming and collecting shellfish

Northland
Day Issued
Tuesday 29 April 2025

Following the Taipā Wastewater Treatment Plan being overwhelmed by heavy rain in recent days, nearby residents and visitors are being advised to avoid contact with the water at Paranui River, Taipa River and Doubtless Bay.

It is recommended people do not swim, play or enter the water, and that people avoid collecting shellfish for at least 28 days from when the overflow is fixed.

Sewage water can contain harmful bacteria, and these also typically accumulate in shellfish, increasing the risk of illness if you eat them.

If you come into contact with the water you may get sick if you have any open sores or cuts. You can also get infected through your eyes, ears and nose. If swallowed, contaminated water can also cause gastroenteritis diseases.

If you have contact with the water at these locations and feel unwell call Healthline on 0800 611 116 or contact your GP for advice and information on what to do next. (external link)
